Why Stickley Antique Furniture are for Collectors

Some companies understand their place in history. Stickley is one of them.

Since 2000 Stickley has manufactured limited edition furniture as part of its Stickley Antique Collector Design Series.  In 2009 the collector piece was a re-issue of Gustav Stickley’s Poppy Table. On December 17, 2009 Sotheby’s sold an original of this table  for $174,000.

The Stickley Antique #26 Poppy Table was one of the earliest pieces designed by Gustav Stickley.  Produced for only a year in 1900, the design reveals the English roots of the blossoming American Arts and Crafts Movement of which Stickley would become America’s founding father. Stickley’s two page ad in House Beautiful in 1900 declared the…”motive for decoration is based on natural forms…where the legs suggest the stem of a plant while the tops reproduce the lines of an open flower”

This design soon gave way to the more rectilinear Mission forms so popular today but upon reflection, it is heartening to include one of these early, original designs as part of the Stickley Collector Design Series.
